Building Bridges: Preventing Bullying through Empathy and Inclusion

Inclusive education and special educational needs, intercultural education, and practical activities and tools for preventing bullying and fostering inclusion in educational settings.

At the request of partner organisations, the course can be structured for 5 or 7 training days.


Sending partners

Educational organisations active in formal, non-formal, and informal learning, including kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, adult education and training centres, resource centres, and other relevant organisations established in Erasmus+ Programme Countries.


Participants

20–25 adults involved in education, including teachers, trainers, and educational staff.


Course fee

According to the Erasmus+ Programme Guide: 80 EUR per training day, covering course preparation, training delivery, training materials, administrative and organisational costs, and 24-hour emergency support.


Trainers

A multinational team of experienced trainers from Portugal, Romania, and Malta, affiliated with SALTO networks, with professional experience and specialisation courses delivered in more than 15 European countries.


Languages used

English (main working language).
Training materials are provided in English.
On request, support can be offered in Spanish and French.


Profile of participants

Participants are teachers (working in kindergartens, primary, lower and upper secondary schools) and adult trainers or educators active in the sending organisation. They are interested in inclusive practices, bullying prevention, and strategies for integrating all learners, regardless of background or abilities.

No previous experience in non-formal education is required. Participants are expected to be motivated to develop professionally, actively engage in preparatory and follow-up activities, and show openness towards intercultural learning and strengthening the European dimension of their institutions.


Objectives

  • To develop competences in applying non-formal education methods and techniques in formal educational settings to foster inclusion
  • To share best practices and facilitate the transfer of knowledge between different cultural contexts and learner age groups
  • To strengthen participants’ competences in group building, addressing diversity challenges, and transforming classes into cohesive teams through non-formal group dynamics
  • To enhance self-awareness of professional competences and develop creative, intercultural strategies for managing inclusion challenges
  • To support teachers in understanding learners’ diverse realities and integrating them effectively into the classroom
  • To identify limiting and negative beliefs and transform them into supportive and constructive attitudes
  • To raise awareness of physical and mental well-being within the teaching profession
  • To improve interpersonal communication and relationships in educational environments
  • To introduce tools and resources that promote well-being and contribute to reducing early school leaving
  • To provide in-depth understanding of bullying and cyberbullying, including forms, impact, risks, and long-term effects
  • To analyse aggressive behaviours (physical, verbal, and relational) and develop effective prevention and intervention strategies
  • To develop digital competences related to recognising and preventing cyberbullying
  • To strengthen mediation and negotiation skills in addressing exclusion and supporting learners with fewer opportunities
  • To promote European cooperation and partnership-building within the Erasmus+ framework

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will:

  • Be able to apply non-formal education activities and techniques in formal and non-formal settings to promote inclusion
  • Understand the characteristics of inclusive, safe, and tolerant learning environments
  • Exchange experiences and intercultural practices through collaborative and cooperative learning processes
  • Use practical tools and methods to address inclusion challenges across different educational contexts
  • Manage group dynamics effectively and build cohesive learning groups using non-formal approaches
  • Develop creative intercultural strategies to respond to inclusion and diversity challenges in their institutions
  • Better understand learners’ diverse backgrounds and needs and integrate them more effectively in the classroom
  • Identify limiting beliefs and transform them into positive and supportive attitudes
  • Improve interpersonal relationships and communication skills
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of bullying and cyberbullying, including causes, impact, and prevention
  • Recognise early warning signs of bullying and aggressive behaviour and apply appropriate intervention strategies
  • Develop digital competences for recognising, preventing, and addressing cyberbullying
  • Apply mediation and negotiation tools to prevent exclusion and support learners with fewer opportunities
  • Design tools and strategies that increase learner motivation and help reduce school dropout

Detailed programme of the mobility period

Building Bridges: Preventing Bullying through Empathy and Inclusion

Day 1 – Understanding Bullying in Educational Contexts

Module content:

  • Definitions and forms of bullying: physical, verbal, social, cyberbullying
  • Power dynamics, roles in bullying situations (aggressor, target, bystanders)
  • Risk factors and protective factors at individual, group, and school level
  • School climate, belonging, and safety as foundations for prevention

Day 2 – Empathy, Emotional Literacy & Social Awareness

Module content:

  • Empathy and emotional intelligence in education
  • Recognising emotions in self and others. Emotional regulation strategies
  • Perspective-taking and its role in reducing aggressive behaviours
  • Developing social and emotional learning through non-formal methods

Day 3 – Inclusion, Diversity & Preventive School Practices

Module content:

  • Inclusion, diversity, and equity in learning environments
  • Stereotypes, prejudice, and unconscious bias in school settings
  • Preventive approaches addressing exclusion, discrimination, and marginalisation
  • Creating inclusive classroom cultures through cooperative and non-formal activities

Day 4 – Intervention Strategies & Non-Formal Tools

Module content:

  • Early identification of bullying situations and warning signs
  • Restorative approaches, peer mediation, and conflict resolution
  • Non-formal tools for prevention and intervention: role-play, forum theatre, simulations, experiential activities
  • Working with groups, parents, and multidisciplinary teams

Day 5 – Transfer to Practice, Whole-School Approach & Dissemination

Module content:

  • Designing anti-bullying action plans adapted to participants’ institutions
  • Whole-school approach to bullying prevention and inclusion
  • Collaboration with stakeholders and community involvement
  • Dissemination strategies, sharing good practices, reflection, and validation of learning outcomes
